League of Legends deactivates character skin codes

Riot Games is cutting out League of Legends skin codes in an attempt to stop third-party resellers and scammers.
League of Legends characters can be visually customized with a wide variety of skins. While these are most commonly purchased directly from the game, the company also distributed some skins via redeemable codes for events and promotions.
Riot noted that this led to a third-party market for the codes, with some rare skins on sale for up to $1,000. Beyond the fact that Riot would receive no money for transactions made on these unofficial retailers, the studio said many of the codes were acquired illegitimately and might not function at all, leaving their purchasers with no skin and no recourse.
A Riot community coordinator revealed on the game's official forums Friday that it had deactivated all skin codes to stamp out the problem. It has also advised multiple payment processors to not "process fraudulent payments" from the sites.
No previously activated skins will be removed from player accounts. Players with codes that have not yet been redeemed have until July 23 to send a request to Player Support with proof of ownership in order to activate the skin, after that no codes will be honored.
