Oculus Rift enhances the terror exponentially
I recently played the Alien Isolation demo for Oculus Rift--the virtual reality headset in development for PC. You can check out my full impressions right here, but the short version is that it's utterly horrifying. Wearing the Rift essentially puts you in the body of Amanda Ripley. Move your own head to look around, peep over boxes, and glance around corners. Look down at your motion tracker, look up at the Xenomorph brutally executing you with its multi-layered jaws.

More useful are the more modest tools, lures and diversions available through the crafting system. Fuelled by salvaging sparse scrap supplies, a few things are currently available. A noise-maker will--hopefully--draw the Alien briefly away from where you’re heading. An EMP will kill the lights and disable androids, but it causes one hell of a conspicuous flash-bang in the process. Molotovs can be bodged together, but carrying a big flaming bottle lights you up like a Christmas tree. And in truth, it’s more use as a distraction than a weapon. Pouring flame all over a corridor won’t hurt the Alien, but it might temporarily block its path while you quickly improvise an escape. Pro-tip: Leaky gas pipes cause one Hell of a firestorm, but they’re not picky about their targets.
