August Games with Gold: Crimson Dragon, Dishonored free on Xbox Live Gold

Microsoft have confirmed the four games that will be made available for free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers on Xbox One and Xbox 360 in August.
Xbox One players will be able to download Crimson Dragon, the spiritual successor to the Pazer Dragoon series, and Space Suit Zero: Director's Cut, an ID@Xbox space sim. Both games will be available for the entire month, August 1-31.
Xbox 360 players will get dirt bike game Motocross Madness, and the critically acclaimed first-person stealth action game, Dishonored.
Motocross Madness will be available from August 1-15, followed by Dishonored from August 16-31.
Games With Gold was launched on Xbox One in June. A single Gold membership provides owners with access to the free games for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One, although the service will differ on the two consoles in one important way. On Xbox 360, users are still granted access to free game downloads even if their subscription lapses, but on Xbox One users are required to maintain their subscription in order to access freely downloaded games.

PS4 MP3 Support Coming This Holiday; No Discounts for PS Now Games You Already Own -- Report

Back in April, we reported on a rumor that the PlayStation 4 was getting MP3 support. Nothing official came from Sony, but many people thought it likely that the console would get some sort of external music compatibility at some point. Recently, we got more evidence that such an update is in the works.

According to reddit user IWorkForSony, who has been verified by r/PS4 subreddit moderators as a Sony employee, Sony is currently developing an update for the PS4 thatwill bring MP3 and video player support by the holiday season. The user also said that DLNA media server support will come some time in 2015.

The user went on to address the upcoming public beta test for PlayStation Now, Sony's game streaming service that's been in private beta for a few months. When someone asked about rumors circulating that owners of PlayStation 3 games may get free access to those same titles via PS Now, IWorkForSony negated the possibility. "Those rumors are wrong," he wrote. "Entitlements for PS3 games won't carry over to PS Now." As for the reason why Sony will not provide discounts, he explained, "Unfortunately, it just doesn't make business sense for Sony to transfer entitlements to PS Now. Streaming games costs them money."

Finally, he revealed that a subscription model for PS Now is still in the works, and that the beta is to test different pricing models.

This week, the user also revealed that the PlayStation Mobile app is getting a substantial overhaul. "There's a redesign in the works," he stated. "It should be more functional and modern (read: less cheesy blue boxes)."

As for the legitimacy of IWorkForSony, I reached out to the moderators and they confirmed that he has provided evidence as to his employment at Sony. Mod IceBreak wrote, "We saw things that pretty much guarantee [he] works for Sony. Besides that there were debug unit OS pictures. I can't elaborate more than that or share the pictures due to the anonymity of the user but I also want to let you know what we used to verify [him]."

We've asked Sony for comment and will update this story if we receive word. Will you take advantage of MP3 support on the PS4? Let us know in the comments.

Destiny Beta Now Open to Everyone; Drops Code Requirement on Xbox One/360 and PS4/PS3

After initially requiring a beta code for access, Bungie is opening up the Destiny beta to all gamers on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3.

Starting today at 4 PM PDT, everyone will be free to play the ongoing beta. The only requirement will be an Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus subscription, depending upon your console of choice. To start playing, check out the dashboard or store on your system for a link to download the beta.

This will ensure everyone who wants to try Destiny has the opportunity to do so before the beta comes to an end on Sunday night. It should also make it easier for those with more than one console to decide which system they want to play the game on when it launches on September 9. But remember, the Xbox One beta doesn't run at 1080p, but the final game is expected to.

Bungie has had a number of surprises for beta testers since the beta began last week. Before today's announcement, it offered a limited time Iron Banner event over the weekend and then brought the beta back online early after scheduled maintenance. And, as previously announced, players who sign into the game anytime between 2 PM PDT on Saturday and the end of the beta will receive an exclusive emblem for use in the full game.

The Iron Banner mode--a competitive multiplayer playlist where you can earn exclusive rewards--will return at least two more times before the beta ends. The schedule for when the Iron Banner will be live follows below (times are PDT):

Friday, July 25

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Saturday, July 26

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

If you play anything on your PC, you can probably run The Sims 4.

Electronic Arts has revealed the PC minimum system requirements for The Sims 4.

In addition to an internet connection and an Origin account to activate the product and a keyboard and mouse, you will need:
OS: Windows XP (SP3), Windows Vista (SP2), Windows 7 (SP1), Windows 8, or Windows 8.1
PROCESSOR: 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, AMD Athlon 64 Dual-Core 4000+ or equivalent (For computers using built-in graphics chipsets, the game requires 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-62 or equivalent)
MEMORY: At least 2 GB RAM
HARD DRIVE: At least 9 GB of free space with at least 1 GB additional space for custom content and saved games
DVD-ROM: DVD ROM drive required for installation only
VIDEO CARD: 128 MB of Video RAM and support for Pixel Shader 3.0. Supported Video Cards: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or better, ATI Radeon X1300 or better, Intel GMA X4500 or better
SOUND CARD: DirectX 9.0c Compatible
DIRECTX: DirectX 9.0c compatible

Not surprisingly, these are relatively low. The Sims is the best selling PC game series ever, so it reaches a wide and varied audience, with many players using low-end PC hardware. According to the specifications above, you could run The Sims 4 on a lot of standard laptops released in the last couple of years. However, keep in mind that these are only the minimum system requirements, so the game could conceivably scale up and look quite nice on stronger hardware.

A recently released gameplay video of the The Sims 4 revealed that EA has plans for something called The Sims 4 Premium, a service that includes early access to new content. The Sims 4 is scheduled for release on September 2 for the PC and Mac.

GTA 4 Keeps Getting Better-Looking on PC

The things that the modding community on PC can accomplish are downright amazing. Take the iCEnhancer mod for Grand Theft Auto IV, for example, which has just been updated once again and continues to make a six-year-old game look like something that could be released today.
With the release of the 3.0 update, a wide variety of graphical improvements for GTA IV have been added or further refined. You can see the full changelog outlined by the mod's creators here, but really all you need to do is check out the video above, which showcases the extent to which GTA IV's graphics are overhauled.
The mod's official website has crashed due to the flood of traffic it's received in the wake of the update's release, but the mod can still be downloaded elsewhere in the meantime. A list of download mirrors can be found here.
GTA IV without the use of any mods.
For those suffering low frame rates, a post on the mod's Facebook page offers some advice--the mod, understandably, is more resource-intensive than the game, which is a system hog in its own right. It's suggested that players open the file "icenhancer_config.txt," where you can tweak options to improve performance. "By default, it's on high quality," the post explains. "Reduce the godray quality, mostly to medium or low."
The sequel to GTA IV, Grand Theft Auto V, will finally arrive on PC later this year alongside Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions. These three new versions will sport much improved graphics over the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, as well as denser traffic and new wildlife, among other things.
Have you tried the iCEnhancer mod before? If so, let us know what your experience with it has been like in the comments below.

Will GTA 5 for PS4, PC and Xbox One release November 7th?

Retailer GameSeek has pegged the release of GTA V for PS4, PC and Xbox One as November 7th.
gameseek_gta5_leak
That’s a week earlier than previously rumoured, although neither dates are official as Rockstar has yet to go on record with a proper date.
The next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto V was announced last month by Sony at E3.
November is a busy month for games releases. A November 7th release would put it right up against the release of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

PS4's Newest System Update Focuses on Improving Stability Once Again

The latest PlayStation 4 system update is now available. Unfortunately for those hoping it includes some new features, this one deals exclusively with system stability.

PS4 owners who turn on their console today will find the 1.74 update available for download. The one and only item listed in the notes for it is identical to what we've seen for several updates in a row: "System software stability during use of some features has been improved."

Addressing stability was the lone change in the last two system updates, versions 1.71 and 1.72, both of which were released in June. An update numbered 1.73 was apparently skipped (or someone at Sony just doesn't like the number).

The last PS4 update to include any new features--or even so much as a specific note about what was changed--was the 1.70 update released on April 30. That was a major update, introducing a new video editor, brightness settings for the DualShock 4's light bar, a way to disable HDCP, preloading support, and a number of other features. To date, it's one of only two system updates (not counting the one available at launch) to offer more than stability improvements and other small refinements.

While Sony has been relatively slow in releasing new feature updates--Microsoft has been releasing monthly system updates for Xbox One--it has nonetheless been the top-selling console since its release. As of April 6, 7 million PS4s had been sold worldwide.

Sony solicits ideas from fans for new features, and allows them to vote on those they would like to see implemented through system updates. Currently, the most popular PS4 ideas on the PlayStation Blog Share website include a way to change your PlayStation Network name, improved media support, notifications for friends coming online (or going offline), and a way to delete listings for games you've earned no trophies in.

What features would you most like to see in a future PS4 system update? Let us know in the comments.

Grid Autosport car DLC released, upcoming patch detailed

Codemasters has released a new Grid Autosport DLC pack and revealed details of an upcoming patch.

The latest game add-on is the Best of British DLC pack. Priced at £2.39 / $2.99, it introduces three new vehicles: McLaren F1 GTR, Aston Martin V12 Zagato and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722.

Meanwhile, Codemasters community manager Ben Walke has revealed details about an upcoming patch, which will make the following changes in response to community requests for more variety in the available tracks online:
-Increased number of potential routes across each of the five disciplines

-Increased number of GP routes that appear

-Ensured all locations feature prominently

Walke said: "What this means is that when you play Grid Autosport online, the playlists will now offer a lot more variety, as the total number of route / discipline combinations has increased over 400%, with both forwards and reversed route variations included wherever possible."

Further additions set to feature in the patch include advanced options for wheels and controllers, a virtual rear view mirror, and matchmaking system tweaks to smooth the process of finding games.

The patch is scheduled to arrive on PC "very soon" and on consoles in "the near future".

In addition to car packs, Codemasters plans to release several mini-expansions with new championships, tracks and cars before October.

Forza Horizon 2's first hundred cars revealed

All auto models in the Xbox One version have been created specifically for the new generation. They also include new features to match Forza Horizon 2's new dynamic weather and time-of-day, including working windshield wipers and headlights.
The game's cover will feature the 2015 Lamborghini Huracán, while cars from the 1973 Renault Alpine A110 to the 1963 Volkswagen Type 2 De Luxe give a strong historical context to its southern Europe roadtrips.
You can find the full list of the first hundred cars at the bottom of this article.
According to Playground Games creative director Ralph Fulton, the Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of Forza Horizon 2 are "different games". The former is being built on the Forza 5 engine by Playground, while the latter is being developed separately on the Forza Horizon engine by Sumo Digital.
Three of the game's racing modes were revealed in an ESRB filing for the game which surfaced Monday.

Naughty Dog Open to a New Crash Bandicoot, But the Time May Not Be Right

Between HD remasters, digital re-releases, and the like, ways to satisfy your nostalgia are not hard to come across these days. Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House recently offered hope to fans who would like to see the company revive some of its older franchises, including Crash Bandicoot--a series created by Naughty Dog, the developer now best known for The Last of Us and Uncharted. Given the studio's current focus on those types of games, you might expect the prospect of a new Crash from Naughty Dog to be completely dead. That's actually not the case, although there is a reason its focus has been elsewhere lately.
"It's never off the table," Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer told IGN when asked about bringing back Crash. "It's not too much time passing, but it's the same issues we explored with the Jak game: Is it something that makes sense to us now? I mean, we still have people that worked on the Crash games in the studio. We never forget our past and it'd be great for nostalgic reasons. It'd be the same reason as why there isn't a Jak 4: I don't know if it's playing to our strengths right now."
Last year, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann revealed that the studio set out to reboot another of its old series, Jak and Daxter, in 2009. As it began coming up with ideas, it found it was "kind of getting away from what Jak and Daxter was. We were questioning, 'Are we doing this for marketing reasons? Naming something Jak and Daxter, when it's not really Jak and Daxter? Or are we really passionate about it?'"
That project never panned out because of Naughty Dog's desire to make a different type of game, and that seems to remain the case, according to Meyer. "Right now, what's exciting everyone at the studio is continuing to work on narrative-driven games with strong characters," he explained. "I think, at least for the time being, we haven't exhausted the possibilities there, but that could change with something as simple as hardware. That's what drove it before. I think we're on to something really good though creating character-driven stories so that's where our focus is going to be."
A game in the core Crash series was last seen in 2008, when the poorly received Crash: Mind Over Mutant was released. You have to go back a decade to 1998's Crash Bandicoot: Warped to find the last core Crash game made by Naughty Dog, which also released a surprisingly good kart racing game--Crash Team Racing--in 1999.
The Crash series--which is now owned by Activision, rather than Sony--has been quiet for years now; the latest title to bear the jorts-wearing Bandicoot's name was mobile game Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2 in 2010. Despite this, Activision said last year that it "continue[s] to explore ways in which we could bring the beloved series back to life."
Naughty Dog is set to release the PlayStation 4 version of last year's acclaimed The Last of Us next week. It's also currently at work on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End for PS4 and some other "brand-new experience."
Would you like to see a Crash revival, or would it best to leave those fond memories--and jorts--in the past? Let us know in the comments.

Ubisoft’s Open-World Racer The Crew PC Closed Beta Starts Tomorrow

Ubisoft’s open-world racing game The Crew will launch its PC closed beta tomorrow, the company has announced.

In addition to launching just a couple of days earlier than originally planned, Ubisoft also revealed what players will be able to test drive during the beta. If you’ve been keeping up with our previous coverage of The Crew, you know the game features a giant, open-world map that allows you to drive from coast to coast of the United States. The closed beta will allow you to free roam the entire map, but only has missions and skill challenges for the Midwest, and skill challenges for the East Coast. You’ll also be able to race other players in the East Coast and Midwest.

Different terrains will require different car specs, and the closed beta will allow you to customize The Street Spec, which you’ll get in Detroit, and The Dirt Spec, which you’ll get in New York. Ubisoft also said that you’ll get a glimpse of the Perf, Raid, and Circuit specs.

The PC closed beta will run from July 21 to July 25. You can sign up for the beta on Ubisoft’s website. The Crew is scheduled for release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on November 11. GameSpot's own Carolyn Petit recently took a trip from Detroit to Miami in The Crew, so be sure to check out her preview for more on the game.

Space Game Elite: Dangerous to Launch With Graphics Options Today’s PCs Can’t Handle

Upcoming Space game Elite: Dangerous will launch with graphics options that players won’t be able to run with their current PC hardware, head of developer Frontier Developments David Braben has said.

"We're going through some wonderful effects internally that look truly beautiful, and we're saying, that slows the frame-rate a bit, doesn't it?" Braben said in an interview with Eurogamer. "And we say yes, but we don't mind, because it looks so beautiful. But what we're going to do is attach it to this part of the detail slider. Or we'll call it out as a tick box...Even if your PC of today can't run with all the features on, your PC of tomorrow might."

Braben said he loves the idea that this will future proof Elite: Dangerous. Theoretically, it could look great long after its initial release as players get better PC hardware. Of course, Elite: Dangerous’ graphics options will also scale to run and look great on a variety of current PCs when it launches.

Braben attributed part of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3’s (another Frontier Developments game) success to this strategy. "One of the things that's really helped us was we had that huge scalability, so the game could run on the laptop of 2004. It could also run on the uber desktop of 2004. Which is the laptop of today. I want to make sure we do the same with Elite: Dangerous."

Elite: Dangerous launches in beta on PC July 29 before its full release later this year. The Mac version will follow, and Braben also recently said that the game could come to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For more on Elite: Dangerous, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Xbox One-Exclusive Quantum Break’s Live Action Show Unaffected by Xbox Entertainment Studios Closure

The live action show component of the Xbox One-exclusive game Quantum Break is still on track despite Microsoft’s recent announcement that it’s shutting down Xbox Entertainment Studios, the division responsible for original Xbox programming.

Developer Remedy, which previously created Max Payne and Alan Wake, told Polygon in a statement that both the game and show are going along as planned, and that it’s excited to share more details about Quantum Break at Gamescom this August.

Xbox Entertainment Studios’ shuttering is part of Microsoft’s plan to lay off up to 18,000 of its employees.

Some of Xbox Entertainment Studios’ employees--including president Nancy Tellem and executive vice president Jordan Levin--will "stay on and remain committed to original programming already in production." This includes Signal to Noise--the documentary series that will cover, among other subjects, the Atari E.T. dig--as well as Halo: Nightfall and Steven Spielberg's Halo TV series.

Quantum Break follows Jack Joyce, a man on a mission to prevent the end of time, fighting against the nefarious corporation Monarch Solutions. The actions you take will impact how the story unfolds not only in the game, but also the show. The game follows Quantum Break's heroes, while the TV show highlights the villains. The game will launch in 2015.

Failed Kickstarted Yogcast Game Wasted $35,000 on One Artist’s Two Weeks of Work

Earlier this week, we learned that Yogventures, a game from the popular YouTube channel Yogscast, has been canceled after raising $567,000 on Kickstarter.

Yogscast co-founder Lewis Brindley said that the project was ultimately “too ambitious and difficult” for the six-man developer it partnered with, Winterkewl Games.

On Friday, Winterkewl lead developer Kris Vale explained to backers via a Kickstarter update some of the issues it faced during development, including one major incident that cost it $35,000. In short, Winterkewl paid an artist in advance, who then went to work at LucasArts without finishing his commitments to the project.

“This is a very good example of how my inexperience caused some problems in the development,” Vale said. “Because we had worked out a contract that guaranteed each of the principal artists a $35,000 lump sum payment, and we didn't make any clear clause on how and why someone could legally stop working on the project, the artist in question got paid, worked for about 2 weeks and then stopped working on the project. We had no way to force that person to pay back any of the funds and it was a bitter lesson to learn. Always get every possible scenario in writing or you will have no legal recourse.”

Vale said that after this incident, Yogacast’s Brindley lost faith in Vale’s ability to manage the budget, and required that the money that hadn’t been spent already be transferred to Yogcast.

“In the end we negotiated that $150,000 would be transferred to the Yogscast with the understanding that they would use that money exclusively to create and ship all the physical rewards, AND they would help hire the main programmer that we still didn't have on the project,” Vale said.

“Winterkewl's statement omits much and I would disagree with a number of points, but there's no value in going into detail,” Brindley said in a post to the Yogcast subreddit earlier today. “Our only goal right now is to ensure that we provide the best possible experience for the backers that we can. I can honestly say this has been our goal throughout.”

Brindley also reiterated that Yogscast is working hard to reimburse the backers with other rewards and a code for a different game, TUG.

Vale said that he needs to consult with his accountant to make sure the information is accurate, but offered a detailed breakdown of how Winterkewl planned to spend the roughly $415,000 it had to work with after Amazon and Kickstarter collected their fees from the total $567,665 raised. The Evil Within Is Coming Sooner Than We Thought

Horror game The Evil Within has moved its release date once again, but if you’re eager to play it the change is in your favor this time. Previously set to launch on October 21, its new release date is October 14, according to the game’s official Twitter account.

The Evil Within was originally scheduled to launch in August for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, but was reportedly delayed to October to give the development team additional time to make further balance changes and refinements to the game.

Developed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and his team at Tango Gameworks, The Evil Within will be published by Fallout and Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda Softworks. Mikami has described the game as a true return to the roots of the survival horror genre.

Eutechnyx reportedly in consultation for 19 positions

Auto Club Revolution and NASCAR studio Eutechnyx has reportedly entered consultation with 19 employees.
The jobs were brought into question after a business restructuring at the company, MCV reports.
Although those jobs may be eliminated, the company's ZeroLight division - which creates virtual product showrooms for client companies - will be spun off and add 25 new positions.
"Eutechnyx has been very successful in adapting to new market opportunities as seen in the launch of ZeroLight," CEO Darren Jobling said. "From a standing start two years ago, ZeroLight has established itself as a market leader in this technology, working with an impressive line-up of the world's leading brands."
Jobling added that Eutechnyx launched Auto Club Revolution and ACR Drift with "experienced partners in China and Japan", demonstrating the "significant benefits of working with specialist publishers in specific markets".
This approach will shape Eutechnyx's strategy going forward, Jobling said.
Aside from racing titles, Eutechnyx launched the poorly received Ride to Hell: Retribution on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 last year.
