There hasn't been a new entry in the Metroid series since 2010's Metroid Other M, while the last 2D Metroid game was 2004's Metroid Zero Mission.
At E3 this week, the general manager of Nintendo Software Planning & Development toldKotaku the company hasn't forgotten about the series.
"So it has been a while since we released the last one and we're having discussions internally about what we can do next," Shinya Takahashi said.
"So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we'll be able to share something about them."
A few months before Wii U's November 2012 launch, Shigeru Miyamoto said the prospect of Wii U entries in the Metroid and Star Fox series excited him due to the possibilities provided by the GamePad.
"With Metroid it's very easy to imagine some interesting implementation for the Wii U," he said. Miyamoto went on to explain that the extra screen and gyro controls provide "a lot of interesting opportunities for development, and we can bring a lot of our games to life in a completely unique way with that".
